After an argument with his mistress Avery Benton, tabloid newspaper publisher Lyle Hayes is shot to death. Told by Hayes' estranged wife of the many people with motives to kill the unpopular publisher, Chris and Rita track down every lead and finally focus on Avery as their prime suspect. After Chris meets Avery's son Randall and makes friends with the boy, Avery claims that she didn't see Hayes on the night he was killed. In the wake of a minor traffic accident, Rita agrees to a date with rock concert promoter Tyler Harris.

Shortly after an argument with fashion photographer Trish Donner, hair stylist Rey Velano is gunned down at his salon along with mob attorney Len Elmore. Though Chris suspects Elmore as the target of the hit, Rita notes that Rey's reputation as a ladies man makes him a likely victim, too. Pursuing the mob angle, Rita questions Tony Paladino, the author of a book on Elmore's boss, Donnie Dogs DiBelco, while Chris visits Rey's estranged wife, Elle, and her boyfriend, football star J.T. Austin. With help from Paladino, Rita is able to speak with DiBelco, who insists that no one would have dared kill Elmore for fear of the retaliation that would follow, while Chris is told of Rey's aborted affair with Trish.

Though a test is found conclusive that Taft and Tracy had sex before she was killed, a fingerprint at the scene matching one from another recent murder suggests the work of an as yet unidentified serial killer.

So, after telling Sorkin how he and Sid Rivers are fighting his attempt to monopolize their illegal enterprise, rival counterfeiter George D'Amato is also murdered.
