At the scene, crucial evidence is stolen by a nerdy CSI wannabe, seriously compromising the case. Across town, a waitress at a trendy nightclub is found shot to death in a dumpster, her body wrapped in a garbage bag. The ensuing autopsy turns up an intriguing find: ants in her stomach.

Horatio comes to believe that the suspect committed a so-called practice murder to prepare himself to kill his wife. The investigation also reveals that the wife's killing may have been racially motivated.
