Guided through the journey by Richard Pimentel s (Ron Livingston) acerbic sense of humor, we see a world that through other eyes would appear devastatingly tragic. Instead, Richard uses it to fuel his plight for the underdog. Unable to pursue his dream of studying public speaking in college, Richard enrolls in the government's 'guaranteed education program" called 'military service' in Vietnam.After 9 months in country, Richard loses his hearing in the Vietnam War. But when the world tells him he can t, he figures out how. Through a new circle of friends, a foul-mouthed genius with cerebral palsy, Art Honeyman (Michael Sheen), a free-loving bombshell, Christine (Melissa George), and a volatile, alcoholic veteran, Mike Stoltz (Yul Vasquez), Richard finds his music within, and discovers what Dr. Padrow had meant all along. The story of celebrated public speaker Richard Pimentel comes to the screen in this biographical drama starring Ron Livingston, Melissa George, Rebecca De Mornay, and Hector Elizondo. As a young man, Pimentel (Ron Livingston) realized he had a remarkable gift for public speaking. Pimentel's idol is College Bowl founder Dr. Padrow (Elizondo), but upon trying out for Dr. Padrow, the ambitious young speaker is informed that he won't have anything to talk about until he has lived a full life. Realizing that there is some merit to Dr. Padrow's observation, Pimenel subsequently enlists in the military and prepares for duty in Vietnam. Later, while fighting on the battlefield, Pimentel loses his hearing and returns home disabled. Frustrated when others inform him that he will never achieve his dreams due to the fact that he is disabled, the determined veteran makes it his mission to prove them wrong. Richard Pimentel (Ron Livingston) begins his life as a fighter, and his life s work becomes a process of fighting for the rights of others. Rising up from a childhood in a dysfunctional family, armed with a talent for public speaking and a winning personality, the young man makes his way to a Northwestern college, confident that he will ace his try-out for his idol Dr. Ben Padrow (Hector Elizondo), the coach of the winningest team in the history of the College Bowl. But Dr. Padrow shatters his dream when he rejects him. Richard s immediate reaction is to enlist in the army for a tour of duty in Vietnam. During combat, the young recruit loses his hearing to a bomb blast, and has to deal with this newfound disability on his return to civilian life in Oregon.
