For three months during the summer season, families come to Lake Eleanor to escape the trials and tribulations they face back home. For the young adults of these families, summer allows them to reinvent themselves. "The Lake" is seen through the eyes of Olivia Harris, a newcomer to Lake Eleanor this summer. Coming in with low expectations, she quickly becomes friends with a tight-knit group of teens that hang out together every year. The recently blended family of the Knights and the Davenports make up half of this clique -- the artsy Madison; the goofy and self-conscious Drew; and their stepsister, the gorgeous Alexis. They are joined by the handsome Ryan Welling and local Luke Campbell. Luke is also charged with covering up for his younger sister, Shelby, who is mysteriously absent from Lake Eleanor. "The Lake" explores the romances, jealousies, friendships and rivalries that are made all the more precious by their fleeting nature. When summer gets too hot, head for "The Lake."

As summer winds to a close, Olivia tries to figure out what comes next, but everyone seems to have unfinished business. Everyone celebrates Drew's 16th birthday with a party by the lake. Luke finally tells Madison his secret and Madison tells Luke about Alexis's decision to have sex with Ryan. Claire tells Leslie it's time for her to start dating again. Claire also confronts Alexis about her intent to have sex. Ryan and Alexis talk about their future together, with heartbreaking results. Drew takes Olivia on a perfect first date, but Aunt Leslie isn't so excited about the conclusion and Olivia is convinced she may never get a first kiss. Newbie Olivia arrives at Lake Eleanor to spend the summer with her Aunt Leslie. The summer kicks off with a cove BBQ, and Olivia quickly makes friends with other teens at the lake - Madison, Drew, Alexis, Luke and Ryan - and joins them in a summer kick-off tradition.
