The plot of the early hip-hop musical is shamelessly cliched — a college music major (Rae Dawn Chong) gets involved with two brothers, one a rap DJ (Guy Davis), the other a dancer (Robert Taylor) — but the story's hardly the point. It's all about the music (Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force, Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five and Rock Steady Crew all perform) and the break dancing craze that helped define the era.
