Carmen and her daughter are appalled at the chilly treatment they receive when they visit their own neighborhood in make-up. After experiencing racism on a regular basis for the first time in her life, Carmen becomes disheartened with Bruno's obstinate views. She expresses serious concerns about their future together. Rose confides to her mother that trying to fit in with her new black friends is a constant struggle. She feels that they are not accepting her because she is not coming across as authentic. As the friction builds between Carmen and Renee, Carmen turns to an outsider for insight into the black experience. Renee also struggles with her son's behavior. Nick, 17, has become fascinated with the gangster lifestyle; especially the flashy materialism. Renee and Brian worry about Nick's judgment when he buys a $150 watch while shopping with Rose. Carmen is upset by the treatment she and Bruno receive at a country-and-western bar while they are both in make-up. She's actually treated with far more hostility at a park in a black neighborhood when she and Bruno pose as an interracial couple: he is in make-up, and she isn't.

The Wurgels (Bruno, Carmen, and daughter Rose) are a white, liberal family from Santa Monica, California; and the Sparks (Brian, Renee, and son Nick) are a middle-class black family from Georgia. Both families get to know each other before they are made up as the opposite race for the first time. They then venture out into public, and are able to experience life as the opposite race. Black dad Brian experiences stellar service at a golf pro shop, something he is not accustomed to. He also gets a job as a bartender in a white neighborhood. White dad Bruno doesn't expect to have any problems living as a black man, which annoys Brian. Brian thinks Bruno is na ve, and is being dismissive of the hardships and prejudice that black people encounter on a regular basis.
