Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne), a word processor, meets a woman named Marcy Franklin (Rosanna Arquette) in a cafe. They converse about their common interest in the works of Henry Miller. Marcy leaves Paul her number and informs him that she lives with a sculptor named Kiki Bridges (Linda Fiorentino), who makes and sells plaster of Paris paperweights resembling bagels. Later in the night, under the pretense of buying a paperweight, Paul visits Marcy, taking a cab to her apartment. On his way to visit Marcy, the majority of Paul's money (a $20 bill) is blown out the window of the cab, leaving him with only some spare pocket change. The cab driver is furious that he can't pay, thereby beginning the first in a long series of misadventures for Paul that turn hostile through no fault of his own. When a 16-year-old girl who had received a kidney transplant from her father arrives at the emergency room feeling dizzy, Carter traces the problem to a new drug that the girl was taking to control seizures related to her kidney dysfunction. Her father feels guilty because he pushed for her to take the new drug, and its side effects may force his daughter to go back on dialysis. The doctor who prescribed the medication, Dr. George Henry (CHAD LOWE - "Life Goes On"), is Carter's former student. Carter asks Neela to post information about the drug's side effects on the Internet, which causes an uproar when the pharmaceutical company finds out. After Abby and Neela complain about their lackluster dating lives, they are assigned to work with Jake (recurring guest star EION BAILEY - "Almost Famous," "Band of Brothers") and Kovac--men they each find attractive.

Jack and the team search for an airline stewardess, Linda Schmidt (HEATHER DONAHUE - "The Blair Witch Project"), who disappeared on her way to the airport. Finally improving her life after a devastating bout with alcoholism, Linda had admitted to her roommate that the man she was dating was very disappointing. As the squad begins to uncover information about her, it appears that Linda was the victim of a serial killer, Richard Morgan (HARRIS MANN), with whom she had communicated through an Internet dating service. The investigation leads to two therapists--Dr. Aaron Morrison (TIM MATHESON - "The West Wing"), who treated Linda, and Dr. Henry Franklin (JOEL POLIS), who treated Morgan--both of whom have privileged information that the team needs in order to find Linda.
