The 44-minute Soldier's Home is based on a story by Ernest Hemingway. Richard Backus stars as a returning World War I veteran who can't adapt to the changes in his home town. Nancy Marchand, Mark LaMura and Lane Binkley costar. Though released separately on videocassette, Soldier's Home was originally telecast on PBS' American Short Story series in tandem with another short drama: Almos' a Man, based on a Richard Wright story and starring LeVar Burton and Madge Sinclair. Based on the story by Richard Wright, Almos' a Man stars LeVar Burton as a black teenager in the South of the 1930s. Working as a field hand, Burton is frustrated at being considered inferior to the local whites. Perhaps if he purchases a gun, he can prove his manhood. This is the decision he makes-much to the anguish of his mother, played by Madge Sinclair. Originally a PBS American Short Story presentation, Almos' a Man was first telecast April 26, 1977. Running some 45 minutes, it was offered in tandem with a dramatizaton of Ernest Hemingway's {-Soldier's Home}. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide.

Although Dave (LeVar Burton) and his family are poor sharecroppers in the Deep South in the 1930's, this 15 year-olds problem is shared by teenagers today: he stands with one foot in adulthood and the other in childhood. "Almos' A Man", yet still treated like a child, he struggles for an identity. There's one thing, one symbol of manhood, Dave thinks, that could guarantee him instant respect: a gun.Dave finds a way to buy a pistol and at last, is ready to pull the trigger for the first time, never again will they call him a boy. But, he trembles, the gun overpowers the boy's body and he loses control. His first shot is a fatal shot -his young life forever changed.
