On the eve of World War II, as millions of Jews were seeking refuge from Nazi persecution, country after country turned its back - all except for Great Britain who opened its doors to an unspecified number of Jewish children in danger. As the children boarded trains taking them to a safe haven in London, their parents were left to embark on a different journey - one taking them to the concentration camps. Most of these children never saw their parents again. Narrated by screen legend Joanne Woodward, My Knees Were Jumping weaves first-hand accounts with extraordinary archival footage to reveal the incredible impact of what became known as the "Kindertransport." From grappling with the guilt of survival to the fear of abandonment that still haunts them to this day, these survivors' unforgettable stories

So far as the Bridges are concerned, however, it's the 1920s, with Mr. Bridge treating his wife like property, regarding his grown children as if they're still adolescents, and habitually voting against that upstart Roosevelt. Though the underlying painfulness of such an archaic arrangement is never ignored, Mr. Bridges' obstinancy is for the most part amusing. The scene that seemed to please the audience most was the one in which Mr. Bridge orders Mrs. Bridge not to leave their table at their country club despite tornado warnings (they sit quietly in the deserted dining room while the building shakes and shudders). As for Mrs. Bridge, her life is totally defined by those around her--which in any other film would be a tragedy, but which here seems a logical extension of all that's gone before. Based on two separate novels by Evan S. Connell, Mr. & Mrs. Bridge is a rare

Joanne Woodward stars as aging Southern belle Amanda Wingfield, whose domineering parenting has driven her shy, timid daughter Laura (Karen Allen) inward and has made her adventure-hungry son Tom (John Malkovich) miserable. Newman hasn't tried to open the original stage play up at all, preferring to keep all of the action within the Wingfield apartment. The cast performed the play in a Broadway revival prior to the filming. James Naughton appears as Laura's gentleman caller. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide.

Joanne Woodward plays Vinnie Miner, a college professor on sabbatical in England. While still on the plane, Vinnie makes the acquaintance of hard-hat tourist Chuck Mumpson (Brian Dennehy). Though she isn't too fond of Chuck's coarse, vulgar behavior, she finds him somehow fascinating. Likewise, Chuck is turned off by Vinnie's nose-in-the-air sophistication, but he's turned on by her. By the time the two of them have hit London, their mutual attraction has blossomed into love--much to the horror of their respective friends and family. Eric Stolz, Stephanie Beacham and Ian Richardson co-star in this made-for-cable confection, which first aired March 17, 1993, over the TNT channel. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide.

Scott stars as Justin Playfair, a retired, widowed judge who labors under the delusion that he's Sherlock Holmes. Feigning concern, Playfair's greedy brother Blevins (Lester Rawlins) hires psychologist Dr. Mildred Watson (Joanne Woodward) to certify that Justin is insane--and in so doing gain control of the judge's millions. Instead, Dr. Watson is drawn into Playfair's dream world, accompanying the judge on his quest to find the elusive (and imaginary) Professor Moriarty. Reality rears its head when a group of vicious blackmailers, to whom Blevins is deeply in debt, attempt to assassinate brother Justin. In a sequence originally cut from the release version but restored for television, Playfair and Watson are rescued by a group of middle-aged eccentrics, who like the judge would give anything to live the lives of their literary favorites (the most poignant of these is librarian Jack Gilford, who wishes to God that he were the Scarlet Pimpernel). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide.
