But just before Silverman called, ABC extended his sitcom's run, pushing its freshman finale to April 18. There are more male faces — JAG alum David James Elliott's included — and perceptibly less focus on Annabeth Chase's struggle to juggle a career and what is now single motherhood. Question: Taping my shows and watching them later, I saw three Christmas-themed episodes in a row: The Dead Zone, Monk and Smallville. My first question is: Why does every episode have to end with someone yelling: "Look! It's snowing on Christmas day! Yeeeaaaahhhhh!"? I thought The Dead Zone was nearly unwatchable, the worst of the bunch, though the hot female psychic was wonderful to see — I hope she does more guest appearances in the future. Monk was a little better, though I figured out the mystery right after the crime was committed. I'm not sure if it is bad writing or the fact that I've seen so many Monks that I am starting to think like him. Finally, Smallville was the best of the bunch, and it was heartwarming to watch Lex actually figure out the true meaning of Christmas. Merry Christmas!

Being a mom is hard. Being a lawyer is really hard. But apparently being a mom and a lawyer is like, the most monumentally difficult task ever attempted by a mere mortal. Annabeth Chase's first day back on the job after 12 weeks of maternity leave pits her against a mee-yow-worthy new boss (Diary of a Mad Black Woman's Kimberly Elise), a tabloid-making case of domestic abuse and the always-unfortunate need to pump breast milk at the office. And frankly, all three of those conundrums seemed to be tied up a little too easily by the end of the series premiere — that last one with a shiny red bow, no less. But I did find myself pleasantly surprised by Jennifer Finnigan's grit as a no-nonsense prosecutor; I didn't expect her to wield that much gravity after last season's cutesy comedy Committed, or even after living through the barrage of Close to Home promos all summer long during my thrice-weekly Big Brother fix, when I usually found i

Jennifer Finnigan
Jennifer Finnigan has returned home. Having started out on The Bold and the Beautiful (where she won three consecutive Daytime Emmys in short order), the actress, after a flirtation with NBC prime time, is back on CBS in Close to Home (premiering Oct. 4 at 10 pm/ET). As prosecutor Annabeth Chase, she will get to the bottom of crimes in the seemingly cozy suburbs while juggling working motherhood and butting heads with her superior (played by Kimberly Elise).
