Michael Keaton ("Speechless," "Batman"), in his smash debut, Emmy-winner Shelley Long ("TV's "Cheers," "Outrageous Fortune") and Emmy-nominee Henry Winkler (TV's "Happy Days") star in this story about a meek man whose calm life takes a hectic and hilarious turn when he's talked into running a call-girl service during his night shift at the city morgue. From director Ron Howard ("Apollo 13"), with a screenplay from the Academy Award-nominated writers of "City Slickers" and "Splash", and featuring Shannen Doherty ("Beverly Hills, 90210") and a young Kevin Costner. Variety praises Keaton for his stunning performance, saying he's "funny, charming and knows how to please an audience," while the New York Post says the movie simply "leaves the audience weak with laughter." Featuring original music by Academy Award-winner Burt Bacharach and Rod Stewart.

This proves well-nigh impossible; Abe, the self-described king of the Hollywood extras, is not only a play-actor in Tinseltown but in life itself, refusing to take on any real responsibilities, least of all the responsibility of parenthood. So far as Abe is concerned, his only family consists of his fellow extras. Though Abbie is extremely judgmental of his father, he himself is no prize in the commitment department, especially when dealing with his longtime lady friend (JoBeth Williams). Director Ron Howard and his frequent scripters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel turn the potentially lurid story material of Night Shift into an endearing comedy, with winning performances from its three often miscast stars. This low-budget independent film by novice directors Stephen F. Verona and Martin Davidson is a slice-of-life elegy from the leather-jacket, bobby-soxer era of 1957, set in a Brooklyn high school. The film stands out for the appearance of up-and-coming actors (circa 1974) Sylvester Stallone, Henry Winkler, and Perry King (even Armand Assante has a bit role). Stallone, Winkler, King, and Paul Mace are members of a local neighbor social club called The Lords of Flatbush, and they spend their time exercising their hormones, hot-wiring a car, playing pool, and quaffing egg creams at the local candy store. The film finally focuses its interest on two of the lords. Chico (Perry King), owns a motorcycle and wheels over to see Jane Bradshaw (Susan Blakely), the daughter of an army colonel who, despite Chico's motorcycle, gives him the brush-off.
