Richard Dadier (Glenn Ford) is a teacher at North Manual High School, an inner-city school where many of the pupils, led by an African American student, Gregory Miller (Sidney Poitier), frequently engage in anti-social behavior. Dadier makes various attempts to engage the students' interest in education, challenging both the school staff and the pupils. He is subjected to violence as well as duplicitous schemes; he first suspects Miller, but later realizes that Artie West (Vic Morrow) is the perpetrator, and challenges him in a showdown-type scenario in the classroom.

In a Harlem club called Minton's Playhouse, a small band of young musicians, led by Dizzy Gillespie and the saxophonist Charlie Parker, has discovered a new way of playing - fast, intricate, exhilarating, and sometimes chaotic. The sound will soon be called "bebop" and once Americans hear it, jazz will never be the same.

Danny wins a raffle. First prize is an expensive Italian racecar, but Danny isn't that lucky: he wins second prize -- F. Scott Fitzgerald, a racehorse! Will Fowler has trained the horse since birth and tells the Partridges that he would like to continue working with F. Scott. Shirley is finally convinced to give racing a try. F. Scott will be entered in the race at the San Pueblo County Fair where the Partridge Family will be performing anyway. The horse is working out well and a young Latin jockey is hired to ride him in the race. A few days before the race, Will calls with the bad news that F. Scott has insomnia -- he hasn't slept in four days. If this continues, he will never make the race. Danny tries hypnotism, Keith tries singing the horse to sleep -- neither works, though. When Buddy receives a new stereo cassette player from his parents, he sells his old unit to Charles for $47.98. Walter warns Charles he is buying a set of problems. Then Walter tells Charles the cassette player destroyed his Glenn Miller tape. Charles asks Buddy for the money back so he can buy a new tape for Walter, but Buddy insist the tape machine was working fine before he sold it to Charles. The argument becomes heated, and it appears their friendship is over.

Later that night, they find Walter and Lillian dancing together to a Glenn Miller tape. Walter and Lillian begin spending time together and Charles worries that Walter will hurt or take advantage of his mother.
