Irritated by a raucous Valentine's Day party in the admittance area as she comes on duty, Weaver attends to a few situations before entering the horrifying examination room where Carter and Lucy lie in massive amounts of blood, almost dead from numerous stab wounds. The police close off the crime scene and search the premises for the presumed attacker, Lucy's schizophrenic patient, Paul Sobriki, whom they later apprehend. With Anspaugh's help, Benton successfully performs surgery on Carter. After her life-saving surgery, Lucy dies from a pulmonary embolism.

A cop, Reggie Moore, who Jeanie treats for a minor injury, asks her on a date. Eventually, she accepts. Greene ponders becoming an astronaut after a friend recommends him for a mission. Carter is annoyed by Edson's behavior toward Lucy. Hathaway befriends Joi Abbott, an exhausted woman taking care of her ill son.

Greene enjoys the male camaraderie at the fire station with the paramedics and firefighters until they try to initiate him with a hazing ritual. Corday's judgment falters after working for 36 hours without rest. Carter unintentionally hears Lucy's private notes in her palmtop computer and finds out what she really thinks about him.

After the candidate chosen as chief of emergency medicine accepts a job at another facility and Weaver learns the committee is hiring someone else, she resigns as interim chief.

The ER treats victims from the bombing of a family planning, prenatal care and abortion clinic. Carter takes care of an elderly patient who he believes is a victim of neglect. The hospital suspends Benton after he admits he pushed Morgenstern out of the way during the surgery that led to Dr. Swanson's death. Morgenstern shows the tape of the botched laparoscopy to Weaver--a tape he had been hiding--and resigns. The tape reveals that Dr. Swanson died due to Morgenstern's error. Benton, who is reinstated, shares a passionate kiss with Corday. Anspaugh requests that Jeanie sing at his dead son's funeral.
