When Joy (Joely Fisher) unplugs the toaster in an effort to be environmentally conscious, Eddie (Brad Garrett) grows annoyed, refusing to believe that the action warrants energy conservation. Wanting to prove his wife wrong, Eddie confronts Tom Franklin (Darryl Sivad), a science teacher at Churchill High, who after siding with Eddie, receives an invite to the Stark house for dinner. Meanwhile, Jeff (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is busy planning a surprise birthday for Steph (Kat Foster) that Eddie and Joy accidentally ruin by their arguing. After Eddie and Joy finally agree to handle their future disagreements in a more constructive manner, their plan goes up in flames along with their toaster.
