How great did it feel to have Ugly Betty and Grey’s Anatomy back on with new episodes this week? Such a scrumptious double feature of feel-good TV. I’m especially keen on Betty these days, this colorful and vibrantly funny new geek on the block. As others have said, it’s the perfect appetizer to the main course of Grey’s, with its usually irresistible blend of suds, scrubs and heartache.Best move both shows made this week: Ditching subplots that were going nowhere. On Betty, that meant saying goodbye to Ignacio’s case worker (who really wasn’t), the crazily smitten Constance (Octavia Spencer). On Grey’s, that meant saying goodbye to the arrogant Dr. Marlow, played by a miscast Roger Rees, a fine actor who came off more like a creepy Dracula than an intimidating Dr. McBrilliant. Question: After reading every inch of the Fall Preview issue, I had a question for you. What I have found missing now is kids. I have kept every Fall Preview issue for about 20 years, and it is fun to pull them out and look back at the photos and see how they have changed over the years. There used to be at least five shows a year with kids, now I can't seem to find any. My question for you is: Where have all the kids gone? Answer: First off, bless you for reading the magazine, something every self-respecting tvguide.com visitor should be doing regularly. But anyway -- for the most part, kids have gone the way of the family comedy and family drama, two near-dead genres. I’m assuming by “kids” you mean “children,” in which case you’re absolutely right: They’re almost invisible. Look closely at the Runaway picture and you can see a cute young kid playing the youngest member of the family on the lam. Otherwise, pretty much nada. The Electric Company is coming back to juice a new generation of early elementary-school kids into mastering reading skills. Executives at Sesame Workshop in New York City are hoping to relaunch the landmark literacy series in the fall of 2007, after a near 30-year absence from public television.
Karen Gruenberg, the Workshop's executive vice president for content, promises a series that will call upon "today's artists and the best in pop culture" to lure at-risk kids to the screen. Just as the original series featured Bill Cosby and bits of sketch comedy, Gruenberg says humor will be an essential part of the new series. "If we don't [have humor], we will have completely missed the mark," she says.
