When jewel thief Alex Gaines turns up dead after losing a necklace he was hired to steal, a business card in his pocket leads Chris and Rita to con artist Cotton Dunn. Though Dunn claims he was only casually acquainted with Gaines, when he and Chris are accosted by Drake, an enforcer for Emile Rossler, the head of a burglary ring preying on Palm Beach's wealthy residents, Dunn saves them both when he hastily claims that Lorenzo is Gaines' replacement. Insisting he be allowed to pursue Rossler, Chris is taken to meet his new employer and is introduced to Shelby Kelman, a beautiful young gem appraiser employed by mob boss Donny DiBarto.
