Anthony Edwards' Return to ER: The Inside Story

Anthony Edwards

Thursday marks the return of Dr. Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards) to ER (10 pm/ET, NBC), which raises at least one tricky question. Like: Didn't that character die? Don't worry, Greene isn't returning spectrally to haunt his former workplace. Rather, the episode is a flashback to approximately six years ago, when Angela Bassett's Dr. Cate Banfield, County General's current chief resident, first came to the ER — as the mother of one of Dr. Greene's patients. For Edwards, not only did he agree with the producers' creative vision for Greene's return during ER's 15th and final season, it gave him an opportunity to spotlight his philanthropy with Shoe4Africa, a nonprofit organization that uses sports, specifically sneakers, to promote health and disease prevention in Africa. Edwards took some time to talk to us about donning Greene's scrubs again, reuniting with his former castmates and whether he sees another TV series in his future.

LIfe after Death

As I prepped for tonights episode it suddenly hit me that for the last fifteen years ER has been a part of my life next September it wont be I guess that its true that all good things must come to an end and with that in mind tonights tragic loss was a fitting though truly sad beginning to the final leg of this journeyGreg Pratt wasnt always an easy character to love or even like for that matter However over the years Pratt matured from a brash headstrong know-it-all into a poised and gifted doctor and a beloved character in the ER It was a fitting tribute that so many of the people he worked with mentored and loved were a part of his final moments As Neela Gates Abby Sam and Morris all valiantly tried to save his life in the wake of the ambulance explosion the most gut-wrenching scene for me was when the severity of his injuries became clear and the tears streamed down his face while his friends desperately tried to help him I imag read more

Anthony Edwards Scrubs Back in at ER

Anthony Edwards by Paul Drinkwater/NBC Photo

Look who ER dug up to celebrate its final season: Dr. Mark Greene, who died of a brain tumor in Hawaii back in 2002. Original cast member Anthony Edwards signed a deal Wednesday night to reprise his popular character for the Nov. 13 episode of the long-running NBC drama.Dearly departed Mark will not be spooking Linda Cardellini (of Scooby Doo fame), but rather will be appearing in multiple flashback scenes to give insight into the past of Angela Bassett's character. In the episode, Bassett's Cate Banfield enters County General Hospital's emergency room — but not in a doctor capacity. At her bedside is Edwards, who collected numerous awards for playing one of TV's all-time most compassionate docs.Entitled "Heal Thyself," the episode is to shoot next week and was written by ER executive producer David Zabel, who will also direct. For its 15th and final season, the series hopes to bring back other familiar vets for one last hurrah, including Noah Wyle, who will return for four of ... read more

May 10, 2007: Sea Change

Man, there was a lot of action to keep up with tonight — challenging cases of couples in turmoil, pseudo-stalkers and missing doctors. (And let’s not forget Luka in a robe. As if we could.) But first thing’s first: let me say for the record that I have renewed hope for next season, and it arrived tonight in the guise of Stanley Tucci. I am intrigued by Dr. Kevin Moretti and what he promises to bring to the table as ER chief. Yes, I am a little prejudiced because I think Stanley Tucci is an amazing actor (I’ve loved him in more movies that I can count, most recently in The Devil Wears Prada). But as he emerges from the long, gorgeous shadow cast by Goran Visnjic, I can still see this formidable actor bringing a grace, maturity and gravity reminiscent of Anthony Edwards. Remember, longtime fans, that Dr. Mark Greene was not beloved because of his dashing good looks or romantic plotlines, but rather because he was utterly believable as a beleaguered, jaded doctor wh... read more

I have been wondering ever ...

Question: I have been wondering ever since Mariska Hargitay first appeared on Law & Order: SVU if she is the daughter of Mickey Hargitay and Jayne Mansfield? I can't seem to find an answer. Can you tell me if she is? Thank you.

Answer: She is indeed, Patricia. Born in 1964 to the title-winning weight lifter (Mr. Universe, Mr. World, Mr. America) and the legendary blonde bombshell, the actress was in the car with her mom and her two siblings when a tragic accident near New Orleans took Mansfield's life in 1967. In fact, early in Hargitay's career, her mom's image helped influence her acting choices — in the other direction. "I played lots of tomboys, wearing flannel shirts, jeans and boots," she told The Los Angeles Times last year. "On some unconscious level, I was shying away from those sexual roles because of my mother. But as I got old read more
