??a Twiste ? Poponguine is perhaps the most charming, fast-paced and accessible film in our Library of African Cinema collection. This bittersweet, coming of age story is a kind of African equivalent of George Lucas' American Graffiti, Spike Lee's Crooklyn or Godard's Masculin/Feminin. These Senegalese teenagers living it up on the beach may also remind less discriminating viewers of Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon in Beach Blanket Bingo! Director Moussa Sene Absa's comedy is set during the weeks before Christmas, 1964, in a seaside village, where the local teenagers are divided into rival cultural camps. Buddy and Charles have agreed to take Lori and Annette to the Kenny Loggins concert which is sold out. While Buddy tries to find tickets, Charles decides to barter his way into freedom. In order to have Ellen home the night of the concert, which means she has to take Adam to the basketball game that evening -- Charles makes an agreement with Sarah to type Adam's paper, in agreement that Jamie will lend her the video camera, in agreement that Walter will lend Jamie his Navy jacket -- as long as Adam washes his car.
