Trailer for Dragon Girls. School assemblies have rarely looked this dramatic - but then Shaolin Tagu Kung Fu School is not your average institution. It's located right next to the Shaolin Temple monastery, considered the birthplace of kung fu. There are more than 20,000 students - and these are no ordinary students; their ritual exercises resemble a scene from a Chinese historical epic. Director and cinematographer Inigo Westmeier captures the early-morning routine in all its cinematic glory, before focusing on three pupils: nine year-old Xin Chenxi, and two teens, Chen Xi and Huang Luolan. The three girls struggle with the school's harsh routine: early rising, six-day weeks, no heating and most definitely no tears. Despite this, as Westmeier's film deftly reveals, becoming a martial arts champion is perhaps their only chance of escaping the poverty that has dogged their families.

Trailer for An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker. Oscar -winner Danis Tanovi (No Man's Land) felt compelled to make this film after reading an article depicting the discrimination suffered by a Roma family in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Operating on a micro-budget, Tanovi contacted the affected family, and convinced them to reenact the episode. The result is this extremely powerful film, which won the Jury Grand Prize and Best Actor prize at the Berlinale. Nazif ekes out a living searching for and selling scrap metal. One day he returns home to discover his wife Senada is very ill; but without a state-provided health-insurance card, or enough money, Senada is refused treatment. The film follows the couple over the next 10 days, as Nazif does everything he can to save Senada's life. Shot in only nine days, and for under $25,000, this is urgent, humanist and very effective filmmaking.

Revisiting a pivotal time in Czech history, Burning Bush begins with a shocking act. January, 1969: student Jan Palach sets himself on fire in the middle of Prague to protest Soviet occupation; he dies four days later. Burning Bush explores the aftermath of Palach's sacrifice, government attempts to discredit him, and the struggle of his family, together with a brave attorney, to defend his legacy. Though focused on this personal tragedy, and using the space afforded to her by the format, Holland brilliantly captures the transformations occurring in Czech society at the time, the spirit of resistance of the people and the gradual resignation in fear of harsher persecution. With a top-notch cast, exquisite cinematography and production design, and its moving portrayal of a struggle against injustice, Burning Bush makes for captivating viewing.
