Dying millionaire Rudolph Deutsch hires a group of four people to enter the notorious Belasco Mansion, the "Mt. Everest of haunted houses," to investigate the possibility of life after death. The previous visitors to the mansion have either been killed or gone mad, and it is Deutsch's dying wish that the team he assembled survive a week inside the cursed house and solve the riddle of its existence. Physicist Lionell Tanner leads the quartet, which includes his wife Ann Barrett and two psychic mediums. Upon entering the house, the younger psychic Florence Tanner immediately makes contact with what she perceives as a tortured spirit, while the more cautious Benjamin Franklin Fischer becomes deathly afraid of the malevolent forces that crushed his former colleagues who dared tread in... "Hell House."
