The show that launched a cultural (and ratings) phenomenon, and still arguably the class of the reality genre---what executive producer Mark Burnett prefers to call `nonscripted drama.' It began with 16 people marooned on an island, working together to survive, but ultimately trying to `outwit, outlast, outplay' the others for a $1 million grand prize. The group is whittled down as players are `voted off' until only one remains.

The smash reality series showcases wannabe pop stars competing for a record deal by crooning for three judges (including, most entertainingly, the acid-tongued Simon Cowell), who review a performer's talent (or lack thereof); and at-home viewers, who vote for their favorite potential star.

A 10-part reality competition in which 12 aspiring chefs compete for culinary stardom. Each episode features two challenges---a short test of basic cooking skills and an elimination challenge, in which one failing contestant is sent packing. The winner scores $100,000, a feature in Food & Wine magazine, and, of course, bragging rights.

But this being a prime-time soap (if a tongue-in-cheek one), they all harbor a sordid secret or two. Created by writer-producer Marc Cherry (a `Golden Girls' alum), `Housewives' was an instant hit and an Emmy nominee in the comedy-series category in its first season.

THIS WEEK'S TV: Grey's Anatomy

Surgical residents at a Seattle teaching hospital hone their bedside manners on and off the job in this medical drama, which parlayed a cushy Sunday time slot (post-`Desperate Housewives') and a hefty dollop of sex and romance into almost-instant success. Indeed, in the opener, intern Meredith Grey sleeps with attending Derek (`McDreamy') Shepherd the night before she starts work at Seattle Grace. The next day she discovers that he's her boss.
